“I’m one of the 1500+ students working under Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation since 3 months in the Rapid Antigen Testing team and the Sanjeevani Home Isolation Care for COVID-19 at SVP hospital, Ahmedabad. While we were aggressively testing a lot of samples through rapid antigen testing in September, we’ve now shifted our focus to Sanjeevani Care as the number of cases have decreased.
Rapid Antigen Testing required us to visit a particular site and test as many people as we could randomly for the day, which turned out to be easier than we had expected it to be. Most of us have now shifted to Sanjeevani Care since mid-September.
A typical day at the Sanjeevani Home Isolation Care begins with waking up to face another challenging day. After signing an attendance sheet, we pick up our kit bags with food, water and PPE and hop on in the Sanjeevani van to the UHC. Every day after we take a list from the Medical Officer, me & my teammates chuckle & shake our heads after looking at the climbing number of cases in the societies we visit. I suit up with my PPE while the driver and my teammates chart the route to the innumerable addresses of the COVID-19 positive patients.
Through 2 layers of mask, a face shield, complemented with dripping sweat, I walk towards the house and clench my temperature gun and pulse oximeter through my double latex gloves before ringing the doorbell of the house with the red sticker. Along with checking the vitals, I give basic medicines, offer advice and counselling to calm the patient down from bouts of agitation resulting from home isolation. I usher back to the van to get to the next address and one by one we check up on our assigned patients and fill in their details in the forms.
Once we’ve covered everyone for the day, I breathe a whiff of fresh air after removing & disposing off the PPE. We return to our hostels with yet another exhausting day awaiting us at dawn tomorrow.
