TN Laparoscopic surgeon, Dr J A Jayalal has been elected as the new national president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for 2020-2021 during the 95th annual national conference conducted on 28th December 2020 at ITC Chola.
Hailing from Kanyakumari, Dr Jayalal did his diploma in Lap surgery from Germany and had an MBA in Hospital Administration from Canada. “What we are is the gift of God and what we become is a gift to God” is the motto that Dr Jayalal believes in deeply. Dr Jayalal is an associate professor of surgery at Government Medical College, Kanyakumari. He was the Senior Vice President of IMA, State Honorary General Secretary for IMA in Tamilnadu state, and the National Academics Wings Chairman of IMA. He is also the National Coordinator of UNESCO Bioethics and Vice President of CommonWealth Medical Association, UK. He also has a particular interest in the family medicine concept.
Health Minister C Vijayabaskar and Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan were the chief guests for the event. Dr. Jayalal was formally installed as the new president of IMA by the outgoing national president Dr. Rajan Sharma. The oath of office was administered to Dr. Jayalal by the past national president Dr. Ravi Whankadekar. Vijayabaskar appreciated the IMA for its cooperation during the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the ceremony, Dr. Jayalal said that IMA would fight against mixopathy and maintain modern medicine’s sanctity. He also expressed the IMA’s concern regarding the prevention of violence against healthcare professionals.
