The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) is one of the most anticipated exams happening in India every year. NEET UG is the qualifying exam in India for MBBS, BDS, and equivalent AYUSH courses in India. NEET UG is also mandatory for those aspiring to pursue primary medical courses abroad.
This pen and paper test was usually conducted in May with an exception in the previous year owing to the delay caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic. In the year 2020, NEET-UG was conducted on the 13th of September.
On the 14th of October, NEET UG 2020 Phase 2 was conducted for those candidates who missed the exam due to Covid-19 or were from the containment zone. Over 13.6 lakh candidates appeared for NEET UG 2020 and 7,71,500 candidates qualified with a score of 50th percentile or above.
The JEE- Mains Exam was usually conducted twice a year. In December 2020, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank announced that JEE-Mains Exam would be conducted four times a year i.e. once a month from February to May.
Following this announcement students and aspirants of the NEET-UG exam requested the Education Minister via Twitter to conduct the exam twice a year. Students also requested for the exam to be conducted online. This request was made so the candidates can improve their scores. In addition to that, conducting the exam twice a year would considerably reduce the tremendous pressure on the candidates.
Last year NEET UG exam was offered in 11 languages including English, Urdu, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Odia, Marathi, Kannada, Gujarati, Tamil, and Telugu. Also, the number of exam centers was increased to avoid crowding and to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) oversees the conducting of the NEET UG Exam. The NTA has expressed its interest to conduct the NEET UG Exam twice a year to the Union Health Ministry.
Education Minister Pokhriyal said that details regarding NEET UG 2021 would be made available in the next 10 to 15 days. The Education Minister also said that there could be a prospect that NEET UG would be conducted twice in 2021. The government is exploring the feasibility and possibilities of conducting the exam twice a year.
NEET aspirants are waiting eagerly for the dates of NEET UG 2021. The examination schedule and application form will be published on the official website of NTA.
